The Honorable Bobby Jindal
Governor of Louisiana
Louisiana State Capitol, 4th Floor
Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70804
Dear Governor Jindal:
Forum 35 is concerned about the viability of Louisiana’s higher education system as a result of the FY 2015-16 Executive Budget presentation. As a community of young men and women with over 450 members and 27 corporate partners, we strive to increase civic engagement and leadership development for the betterment of Baton Rouge. We believe that a comprehensive education serves as the foundation for success of Louisiana’s future leaders. As such, we view the support of Louisiana’s higher education institutions as paramount. Our universities must not only focus on graduating more students, but graduating students who can succeed in today’s highly competitive economy. We believe that continuing to reduce state support for higher education will further erode our institutions’ ability to address Louisiana’s educational and workforce goals. We hope that you will join us in supporting the following goals:
Ensure that as revenue raising options are considered during the 2015 legislative session; higher education is the first priority for funding.
Continue efforts to ensure increased tuition and fee revenues are retained at each institution for reinvestment.
Provide greater authority and flexibility in setting tuition and fee rates and retaining those revenues.
Provide greater short-term flexibility regarding admission eligibility and GRAD Act performance requirements at all institutions.
Provide autonomies to all public colleges and universities with savings from increased efficiencies retained at each institution for reinvestment.
Replenish the Workforce and Innovation for a Stronger Economy (WISE) Fund with state general fund dollars and maintain the current fiscal year level of state general fund support for all public institutions of higher education.
Forum 35 members look forward to meeting with you in the State Capitol Rotunda on April 16th. We hope that you will work with the legislature to properly fund our higher education system to ensure the success of Louisiana’s citizens.
President of Forum 35
